The numbers of people who are homeless in Australia, and around the world are exploding.

All kinds of reasons lead to someone being without permanent, safe housing – from mental health to domestic violence, personal circumstances, and everything in between.

  • ABS has posted an additional 400,000 beds will be required per year within the next 7.5 years for seniors living

  • In the last 6 months, Queensland's Gold Coast homelessness has increased by 28% and it is flooding the streets

  • At the time of the 2016 census, there were 116,000+ people homeless in Australia which was an increase of 14% over 5 years since 2011

  • In NSW, homelessness has increased 37% since 2011.

  • In Sydney, it‘s even higher with a 48% increase in rates of homelessness since 2011.

  • Indigenous people are 10x more likely to experience homelessness.

  • There are 2,265,000 people in Australia living in poverty and 575,000 children living below the poverty line (as of 2012).

  • People over 55 represent 17% of the homeless population of Australia, but represent only 7% of clients accessing specialist homelessness services (in 2014/2015) making them vulnerable and least supported.

  • Social Housing investment by state and territory governments has fallen by 7% since 2012-2013.

  • There are more than 250,000 Australians on public housing waiting lists.

  • On any given night, 1 in 200 people is homeless in Australia.

  • As of June 2019, there are 46,530 people on the general waiting lists, and 4,484 on the priority lists for public housing in NSW.

  • 33% of all people in NSW and the ACT reported the cost of accommodation as an immediate cause of food insecurity (2018).

  • The expected waiting time for a 3 bedroom house in Maitland NSW is 10+ years. For a 1 bedroom or studio, apartment wait time is estimated at 5-10 years.
